At the Unique Threading Salon in Chelsea, we offer a variety of other hair removal services in addition to threading. For body hair removal, we offer waxing and sugaring. Although most women are familiar with the process of waxing, few have yet to discover the benefits of sugaring.

What Is Sugaring?

Sugaring is a hair removal process that uses a paste consisting of water, lemon juice and sugar to remove unwanted hair on the face and body. Waxing uses a combination of heated resins to remove unwanted body hair. What are the benefits of sugar hair removal?

Sugar is hypoallergenic and less likely to become contaminated because bacteria cannot grow in a pot of sugar paste.

Easy to Clean Up

When you remove hair with wax, some sticky residue will remain, which isn’t easy to remove. You need some type of oil to remove the wax residue, which can still feel sticky. However, sugar is water soluble, which makes it incredibly easy to remove from the skin. Simply wipe the area with a warm, damp washcloth and the residue immediately dissolves.

Will Not Remove Skin

Because sugar is water soluble, it will not stick to skin cells like wax. When you are waxing hair off your skin, you could remove some skin cells, which results in irritation and redness post-treatment. Therefore, sugaring can be less painful than waxing and it’s an excellent choice for anyone with sensitive skin.

Less Breakage

Waxing can result in a small percentage of hair breakage, which means that the hair breaks instead of being removed, resulting in immediate regrowth. One of the main reasons people choose to wax their hair is for longer-lasting results, so this can be a bummer.

In contrast to waxing, sugar is applied against the direction of the hair growth and then removed in the same direction that your hair grows. This action causes the sugar to penetrate the hair follicle and successfully remove it without breakage. When you choose sugar, you will have smoother, more hair-free results longer.

Can Remove Shorter Hairs

In order to properly remove hair, it must be at least ¼” long for waxing, which equals about two weeks of regrowth. Sugaring can remove hair that’s only about 1/16” long, which is only about a week of regrowth.

No Burns

If your esthetician fails to test the wax before applying it to your skin, you could be burned from wax that is too hot. Wax can easily reach extremely high temperatures, so it needs to be constantly monitored.

However, sugar can be used at room temperature, which means that you don’t have to worry about any burns. Less heat also reduces swelling because it draws fluid to the skin.
